Tempos live between 130 and 135 BPM, the kick is short and punchy rather than sub-heavy, and the hats are skippy and full of gaps, with an open hat used as a lift into the next bar.
How to program uk garage drums
- Program the snare on beats 2 and 4 first, put a kick on beat 1, then deliberately leave beat 3 empty. Place your second kick on the 'and' of 3 or the 'a' of 1 instead. That missing downbeat is the entire trick behind the 2-step feel.
- Set swing around 30-40% so offbeat 16ths land noticeably late, then write hats with holes in them rather than a solid 16th roll. Alternate loud offbeat hats with quiet ghost ticks at 0.3-0.45 velocity, and drop an open hat on the 'and' of beat 4 so it rings into the turnaround.
- Keep the kick short (decay around 0.3s) and let a separate sub bass carry the low end on the offbeats, answering the kick instead of doubling it. Layer a tight, fast-decay clap under the snare on beat 4 only, so beat 4 hits harder than beat 2 and the bar has a clear direction.
