UK Garage 2-Step Drum Pattern: the Kick That Skips Beat 3
2-step is defined by what is missing. The kick lands on beat 1 and then refuses beat 3 - it reappears on the "and" of 3 in bar 1 and on the "a" of 1 in bar 2, so the low end lurches instead of marching - while the snare stays nailed to 2 and 4 as the only fixed point in the bar. A clap doubles the snare on beat 4 only, at 0.8 and 0.9 against 0.55 on beat 2, so the second backbeat lands harder and the two-bar loop has a direction. Everything sits on 34 swing, which drags every off-beat 16th late; that is what turns the hat part from a machine roll into a skip. The closed hats arrive in pairs with holes between them - the "and" and the "a" of a beat, then nothing on the next downbeat - and an open hat lifts the "and" of 2 and the "and" of 4 over into the next beat. A shaker ticks the off-16ths at 0.3 so the gaps ring rather than go dead, and a sub bass answers the kick from the offbeats instead of doubling it. Tempo lives at 130-135 BPM; this pattern is at 133.
Play it yourself
- Tap the snare (pad 3, key C) on 2 and 4 and the kick (pad 1, key Z) on beat 1 only, and leave beat 3 empty on purpose. Play that for a bar - the hole on 3 is the entire trick.
- Now put the second kick somewhere off the grid: the "and" of 3 or the "a" of 1. Never squarely on 3 - the moment the kick lands there it is four-on-the-floor house, not garage.
- Hats last, and fewer than you think: pairs on the "and" and "a" with the downbeat left empty, then an open hat (key D) on the "and" of 4. Push swing to 34 and the pairs start to skip; at 0 the same hits sound like a metronome.
