The Bo Diddley groove
The five-stroke clave figure hammered out on a real floor tom and maracas under a room-sized backbeat — the rhythm that turned Afro-Cuban phrasing into rock and roll.
What makes it feel this way
The engine here is the son clave squeezed into a single bar of 4/4: hits on 1, the "a" of 1 and the "&" of 2 (the three-side, a tresillo), answered by the "&" of 3 and beat 4 (the two-side). Played on a low floor tom instead of claves and doubled by maracas, that figure stops being Latin percussion and becomes a rock and roll engine — a hambone pattern beaten out on a drum kit. The kit is modelled rather than sampled: kick, snare, ghost snare, both toms, the cross-stick slap and the ride are struck-membrane and struck-metal models, so the toms genuinely bend in pitch as they decay and the snare wires rattle on a beat behind the stick. Around them sit machine voices — maracas, handclaps, hats, cowbell, a fat sub note and a chord stab — for the hambone grit. The tension comes from the collision between that lopsided five-stroke phrase and a completely square backbeat on 2 and 4, so the snare keeps insisting on the grid while the toms keep sliding off it. Listen for the two-side of the clave landing on the "&" of 3: it arrives a 16th before you expect the bar to resolve, and the huge slap-back room on the snare smears everything into one continuous shout. Even the stripped section never goes quiet — the ride keeps washing underneath while the cross-stick takes over the backbeat.
