The Half Shuffle groove

A shuffling triplet hi-hat and a cloud of whispered snare ghosts under one enormous backbeat on 3 — the great slow groove of studio rock and funk drumming.

Tempo 92 BPM  ·  Feel swing 50  ·  Length 2 bars  ·  Family ROCK

What makes it feel this way

The half-time shuffle is what happens when a drummer keeps the shuffle running at full speed in the hands but halves the backbeat, so the snare lands once a bar on beat 3 instead of twice on 2 and 4. It comes out of blues and second-line shuffles by way of 70s studio funk and rock, and it lives on the gap between loud and quiet: the backbeat is enormous, and everything around it is a stream of triplet ghost notes played at a whisper by the same hand. Heavy swing pushes every off-beat 16th late so each half-beat becomes a long-short lope; the ghosts fall in that late slot, especially the one right before the backbeat and the one that answers it. The core of this kit is modal — a struck bass drum with real shell air, a wire-rattling snare, two tuned toms, a hand-struck cross-stick and a ride built from irrational metal partials — with analogue voices kept for colour only: the whispered ghost snare, the soft doubling kick, the three hats, the sub and the Rhodes stab. Listen for the space — beat 4 has no snare at all, the kick answers itself on the "&" of 2 and the "&" of 4, and even when the groove strips back to a cross-stick the shaker never stops, so the room keeps breathing underneath.

It is loaded and playing
