The Techno Stomp groove
Hard four-on-the-floor with offbeat hats and a sub that rumbles in the gaps between kicks — the warehouse pulse you feel before you hear it.
What makes it feel this way
The whole thing obeys one law: a kick on every quarter note, tuned short and hard so the beater click cuts and the tail never smears into the next hit. That kick is the only purely electronic drum at the bottom of the kit — underneath it sits RUMBLE, a struck acoustic bass drum rendered by modal synthesis and then low-passed to 760 Hz with a long room tail. It is a real membrane and a real shell moving air in a concrete box, and because it is a completely different generator from the analogue kick it never sounds like the same drum played twice; it is why the groove feels physical rather than clicky. The snare is modal too — shell modes and wire rattle, tuned high and choked to a tenth of a second — so the ghost strokes at the end of D TURN sound like a stick on a head rather than a burst of filtered noise, while the CLAP beside it stays defiantly synthetic. The metal is split the same way: CLANG is a small, badly tuned cymbal partial-set (f0 196 Hz, hard ping, almost no wash) crushed and driven until it reads as struck sheet steel, and it repeats every six sixteenths so it walks against the 4/4 grid and the two-bar loop never lands the same way twice. CRASH is the same modal engine opened right out — 560 Hz, two-second decay, all wash and no ping. TOK is a hand drum tuned to 500 Hz with a fast bend, a fingertip on a small head. The two bass notes disagree on purpose: SUB F# is a pure analogue sine with punch, SUB E is a modal low tom at 41.2 Hz, dark and woody where the sub is glassy. Everything else deliberately avoids the downbeat: closed hats on the offbeat eighths, the sub only speaking in the holes between kicks, and a shaker that never stops. That shaker is the spine of C STRIP — the section takes away weight, not sound, so the kick thins to two hits in the second bar while sixteenth-note shaker, offbeat hats and the low tom keep the room breathing. Listen for the sub swinging in and out of alignment with the clap, and for the tiny 0.26-velocity hat ticks on the 'a' of each beat that pull you into the next stomp.
