The Disco groove
Four-on-the-floor bass drum with an open hi-hat lifting every offbeat and a jingling tambourine glittering over the top.
What makes it feel this way
Disco takes the steady quarter-note pulse and hangs an open hi-hat exactly halfway between every beat, so the groove is always leaning forward into the next kick — that "boom-tss, boom-tss" is the whole engine of the style. The bass drum here is a struck acoustic one, membrane modes and shell air rather than a synthesised thump, and the backbeat is a real wire snare on 2 and 4, doubled by a wide electronic handclap so the two eras sit on top of each other. A metal tambourine works the offbeat eighths while a shaker runs the sixteenths so nothing ever sits still, and the bass plays the classic octave leap: a sine sub on the beat, a filtered resonant octave on the "and", locking to the kick and hat like a second drummer. Listen for the closed hat clipping the open hat's tail short on every downbeat, the sixteenth ghosts sneaking in before the backbeat, and the turnaround roll that descends through a bongo-tight high tom, a tuned mid tom and an analogue floor tom. The stripped section pulls the kick out for a whole bar but keeps the shaker, tambourine and bass walking, so the room never actually goes quiet.
