The One Drop groove

The reggae groove that leaves beat one completely empty and lands the kick and snare together on beat three.

Tempo 74 BPM  ·  Feel swing 19  ·  Length 2 bars  ·  Family REGGAE

What makes it feel this way

One drop inverts what a rock or funk drummer does: beat 1 is silent, and the whole weight of the bar falls on beat 3, where a felt-muffled bass drum and a cracking snare hit as a single event. Both of those are struck-membrane models here rather than synth tones — the kick is a real head with its beater thud and shell air, the snare a shell mode with wires that outlive it — so the big beat-3 event lands like a drummer rather than a drum machine. Around it sits the analogue colour reggae actually wants: a tuned sub carrying the bassline, an organ-style skank chop on every offbeat, a side-stick click on 2 and 4. The space on the downbeat is the point, so nothing is ever truly empty — hats ride the eighths and a shaker runs the sixteenths underneath, breathing straight through the stripped section where the weight drops away but the pulse does not. A touch of swing lets the offbeats fall late and lazy; listen for how the accented "and" of each beat is louder than the beat itself, and for the bass walking down to the fifth on the "and" of 4.

It is loaded and playing

This page loads the groove as a full four-part arrangement — a main groove, a variation, a stripped-back section and a fill — chained together, on a kit built only for this rhythm.
